Jean-Claude Béïque, Ph.D
Investigates the basis of synapse function and plasticity
Associate Professor
Faculty of Medicine - University of Ottawa
Jean-Claude Béïque's team studies synapses, the sites of functional connections between neurons in the brain. These tiny structures are highly dynamic and change their function and shape in response to activity. These alterations have been termed “synaptic plasticity”, and the mechanisms that mediate plasticity have been shown to decisively influence how information is processed and stored in the brain.
Jean-Claude Béïque's research activities aim to determine the fundamental features of the function and plasticity of neurons of the brain. His team uses mechanistic, molecular and computational approaches.
His research can be broadly subdivided in 3 themes:
- Cellular and molecular basis of synapse function and plasticity
- Synapses and stroke
- Synapses and affective disorders
