Mario completed his PhD studies in 2009 at Laval University in cellular and molecular biology in the Ophtalmology research unit. His passion for neurons and light is not new, as attested by his previous studies in Biophysics (BSc and MSc obtained at the Photobiophysics research centre in Trois-Rivières, UQTR, Québec) and Neurological Sciences (MSc obtained at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University). In 2012, he became adjunct professor in the department of biochemistry, microbiology, and bioinformatics of Laval University.

Attracted by new scientific challenges and the interaction between optics and medical sciences, he joined the Quebec Mental Health Institute Research Centre in late November 2009 to manage the infrastructure strategic planning and the implementation and development of the 22,000 square feet facility known as the "Neurophotonics Center" (CNP). His tasks also include the coordination of the Neurophysics and Biophotonics training grants, the management of the CNP’s technological platforms, the organization of International symposiums ‘Frontiers in Neurophotonics’, the coordination of the Society for Neuroscience Quebec city chapter, negotiating new partnerships with private and public partners, increasing the CNP's exposure to help position the research center as an international leader in neurophotonics while occasionally representing the CNP at international meetings, and organizing the yearly international ‘Frontiers in Neurophotonics’ Summer School.

Mario is finally in charge of the coordination of the graduate programs (MSc and PhD) in Biophotonics at Université Laval.
