Paul De Koninck studies how neurons establish connections and form complex neural circuits such as those found in the brain. He is interested in understanding the mechanisms that contribute to the establishment and remodeling of these neural circuits, as this is thought to represent the fundamental processes of learning and memory. These mechanism are finely regulated, as abnormal levels of neural activity can lead to cognitive deficits or neurodegenerative disease.

Cutting edge optogenetic tools are at the heart of the experimental approaches he uses to study neural circuits.
